It started with the intention of revitalizing the region along the Kiel Canal. In the end, putting their good contacts to the rowing scene to use, the organizers planned a 12.7 km eight race from Breiholz to Rendsburg. E.ON Hanse was happy to act as main sponsor of this idea.

After the first two events, the E.ON Hanse Cup made a name for itself beyond the country´s borders and is now well on track to becoming a tradition.
