Matthäus Thoma - Interior and Exterior Shapes

Matthäus Thoma uses simple materials, untreated wood and pieces of cardboard retrieved from supermarket trash containers to build highly sophisticated models depicting the relationship between space, time and art, which deal with the present-day treatise about aesthetics in a familiar fashion.

His artwork is thus to be interpreted as a well thought-out system of experiences. Thoma´s quasi-scientific, yet empirical method of approximation thus leads to final results. The journey is the reward.

The ultimate objective is to allow the viewer to experience a sculpture´s interior and exterior shapes, while not only examining architectural and kinetic moments in the sculpting process, but also presenting them as their own substance as well. The "simple" materials thus avert one`s glance from one`s self, focusing it on the task, i.e., they become "appealing."

Thoma works in the space between functionality and lack of purpose, experimenting with the two extremes of artistic creation and constantly citing them as unobtainable states, while deconstructing them at the same time. Moreover, therein lies a narrative moment: the tale of the sculpture`s creation from the spirit of the architectural.
