Caspar David Friedrich - The Passionate Romanticist
Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) introduced Romanticism to painting. Having fallen into oblivion while alive, Friedrich was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century and is now considered Germany´s preeminent romantic painter.
Hamburger Kunsthalle, October 7, 2006, to January 28, 2007
E.ON Energie and our subsidiary E.ON Hanse are partners to the Hamburger Kunsthalle and sponsors of the Caspar David Friedrich exhibition. Over 70 paintings and more than 100 drawings, outlined in pencil or sepia, as well as watercolors will be on display. Many of his masterpieces stem from the world´s four major collections of his work, which are at home in Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden and St. Petersburg.
Now the world is again abuzz with Romanticism, as can be seen in art and literature as well as in advertising and entertainment. This seems absolutely logical as the increasing trend towards individualization has its roots in Romanticism, as does the extensive beautification of the world around us. Therefore it appears all the more urgent to bring back to memory the beginnings of Romanticism and the original ideas spun by early romanticists. Plunged into demystified reality, they build on the concepts of unity, wholeness and raison d´être, creating a counterworld to uniformity and normalcy.
