Rupprecht Geiger - Red, Life, Energy, Love

In 2005 E.ON Energie´s new Munich headquarters entered its final phase of construction for the time being. Designed and erected by the Munich architect studio Adam, the building´s highlights are phenomenal clarity and austere shapes - characteristics also featured in 784/88, an oeuvre of Rupprecht Geiger´s purchased to adorn the new edifice.

Today, our employees, visitors and passers-by can all view the work of art.

Now 98, Rupprecht Geiger still uses the color red in his paintings-as powerfully as no other: "Red is life, energy, virility, power, love, warmth, strength. Red makes you high. Red is in the sun´s spectrum. Look into the sun going down in red embers and it will give you strength for the following day."

Rupprecht Geiger was born in Munich in 1908 and embarked on architecture as his first course of study. At the end of the war, he turned to painting. In 1949 he was among the founding members of the´ZEN 49´group, which was committed to meditative harmony as taught by a Japanese variant of Chinese Chan Buddhism. From then on, pure, or, as Rupprecht Geiger would put it, "total" color played the key role. Accordingly, the color became the motif. 1949-62 Worked as an architect. 1965-76 Professor of Painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. 1970 Member of the Board of Trustees of the Berlin University of the Arts, Berlin. 1983 Member of the Board of Trustees of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. 1988 Art Award recipient, Berlin.

The energy and vitality of his artwork have survived to this very day.
