UCTE — Connected Across Borders

Our subsidiary E.ON Netz is a member of the UCTE (Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity) which unites the transmission network operators of the European integrated grid. A total of 23 European countries are interlinked across their frontiers at the ultra high-voltage level, which operates at 380 and 220 kilovolts. The UCTE is the world’s most powerful international electricity union that issues network operating regulations on a voluntary, but binding basis.

The UCTE ensures the security of supply of some 500 million people on the back of nearly 2,500 TWh in annual power consumption. It enables connected network operators to provide each other with rapid support during unscheduled power plant downtime and large-scale network outages. One benefit derived from this is that it lowers the requirement for expensive reserve capacity in the individual countries. Furthermore, the UCTE sees to it that all connected countries are treated equally when reserve capacity is apportioned and that general transmission costs are kept as low as possible.
