The Contribution Made by Wind, the Sun, Water and Biogas
Mounting global demand for energy and concerns over our climate make it paramount to find better and more efficient solutions in the field of energy supply. Renewables' share of total power generated is growing steadily worldwide. The EU is aiming to have twelve percent of aggregate energy consumption covered by renewable sources of energy by 2010. Power from water, wind, biomass and the sun constitutes an environmentally friendly supplement to coal and gas power plants. This is why E.ON Energie is investing in the development and promotion of energy from renewables.
Wind plays an important role above all in the north of Germany. We operate wind farms in Lower Saxony and Schleswig Holstein and, via our subsidiary E.ON Energy Projects, we are involved in the development of offshore wind farms.
Whereas the sun, wind, biomass and biogas still account for a rather small portion of electricity generated and this will not change in the future, one renewables-based energy variant has always played a significant role in the energy industry: hydroelectric power. In Germany, our subsidiary E.ON Wasserkraft is the largest producer of electricity from renewables.
