Nuclear Power - Simple Principle, Big Effect
Controlled nuclear fission has been used to generate electricity throughout the world for more than 50 years. At the end of 2005, more than 440 power plant units were in operation worldwide. Some 16 percent of global electricity production comes from nuclear power plants. In Germany, they account for about 26 percent of aggregate power production.
What Makes Our Power Plants the Best in the World?
Compared on an international scale, our subsidiary E.ON Kraftwerke's power plants rank among the most productive in the world. When operating our power plants, we resolutely make use of state of the art technologies and scientific findings. This is why we have been cooperating closely with scientists and researchers for more than 30 years.
Electricity generated by nuclear power stations is environmentally friendly: roughly 150 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are avoided every year by employing nuclear energy in Germany alone. This corresponds to annual combined car and truck emissions in Germany. Since increasing carbon dioxide emissions contributes to the greenhouse gas effect, we believe that reducing emissions is instrumental when it comes to protecting the environment. Our objective is to conserve the climate by working with an efficient energy mix.
