Lignite and Hard Coal - Powerful Sources of Energy
Our subsidiary E.ON Kraftwerke operates two types of coal-fired power plants: hard coal and lignite power stations. All of the facilities comply with strict environmental standards. Furthermore, our engineers and technicians constantly strive to improve the efficiency of our power plants.
The "fuel" for some of these power stations is obtained from German hard coal mines and by extracting proprietary lignite in the Lower Saxon mining region near Helmstedt. In contrast, hard coal power plants in coastal areas use imported coal. Using coal is not problem-free, since the air pollutants that are released when it is burned can be harmful in certain concentrations.
These substances must be captured as much as possible and rendered harmless. This is principally achieved by equipping the plants with effective techniques for removing dust, nitrogen and sulphur from the flue gases. In addition, specific fuel consumption can be reduced by taking efficiency-enhancing measures.
