BKW is 20%-owned by E.ON Energie AG. In 2005, the company supplied over 7,058 gigawatt-hours of electricity to about 1 million people in 467 Swiss municipalities (with 322 municipalities supplied directly, and 135 indirectly via distribution partners). In 2005, BKW's CO2-free electricity production portfolio comprised seven hydroelectric power stations and one nuclear power station plus rights to partner-owned plants in Switzerland and a number of other neighboring countries. BKW runs Switzerland's largest renewable energy generation facilities (solar, wind, and biogas). Together with E.ON Energie AG, BKW has also been operating Electra Italia, a Milan-based electric distribution company, since 1999.

E.ON Energie's operations in the Netherlands are consolidated in its wholly-owned subsidiary, E.ON Benelux b.v. Its generation, marketing, and service operations are managed by E.ON Benelux n.v. E.ON Benelux concentrates on the production and supply of electricity and heat to industrial and private customers (through NRE Energie). The company, one of the largest electricity companies in The Netherlands, owns the Maasvlakte power station, a European leader in generation efficiency.

Via its shareholding in E.ON Ceská republika, E.ON Energie is the biggest foreign investor in the Czech energy sector. It has played a major role in drafting Czech energy legislation and is helping the country transition to open energy markets.

Based in the city of Bacau in north-eastern Romania, E.ON Moldova supplies around four billion kilowatt hours of electricity to some 1.3 million customers each year. E.ON Energie's acquisition in 2005 of a 51 percent controlling interest in E.ON Moldova's predecessor, which commands a market share of eleven percent, marked the company's successful entry into the Romanian energy sector. In 2004, E.ON's new subsidiary generated sales of around 241 million euros. The Romanian electricity business is expanding rapidly.

E.ON Energie took over the management of ZSE in early September 2002. With a 37% market share, ZSE is Slovakia's largest energy utility. Its service territory comprises the country's fastest-growing region-including the capital city of Bratislava. Roughly half of Slovakia's gross domestic product is currently generated in the Bratislava metropolitan area. ZSE's service territory borders those of E.ON Energies Czech and Hungarian shareholdings. This regional context opens the door to synergy opportunities.
