E.ON Netz promotes Market Coupling between Germany and Denmark

E.ON Netz and the transmission grid operators Vattenfall Europe Transmission and Energinet.dk as well as the Scandinavian and German exchanges Nord Pool Spot and European Energy Exchange will introduce the market coupling scheme before the end of 2007.

Market coupling is a method used to manage cross-border grid congestions effectively. Power trading and allocating cross-border transmission capacity take place at the same time within this scheme. It thus facilitates power trading and bolsters the continued integration of European electricity markets.

In October 2006, the five project partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the introduction of market coupling. Following the initial idea and its development into a concept, a clear project structure was presented in March 2007. Its implementation started in April when six working groups were set up. All of the project partners are working with due diligence and great ambition to provide the market with this coupling as quickly as possible. The coupling scheme is scheduled to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2007.
